COMPARATIVE AESTHETICS OF PRECARITY THROUGH NARRATIVE STRATEGIES IN ANITA NAIR AND ANURADHA MARWAH

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the comparative aesthetics of precarity in the fiction of Anita Nair and
Anuradha Marwah, focusing on how their divergent narrative strategies articulate
vulnerability, instability, and resilience within Indian women’s writing. Drawing on
theoretical frameworks of precarity proposed by Butler (2004), Standing (2011), and Lorey
(2015), the research explores how Nair’s realist narratives in Ladies Coupé, Mistress, and
Eating Wasps foreground affect and empathy, while Marwah’s satirical works, The Higher
Education of Geetika Mehendiratta and Dirty Picture, employ irony and critique to expose
systemic inequities. Through comparative textual analysis, the study demonstrates that
precarity is not merely a thematic concern but is embedded in form, structure, tone, and style,
thereby shaping reader engagement and interpretation. Ultimately, the research highlights
how both writers expand the aesthetics of Indian feminist literature by integrating precarity
into narrative design, positioning literature as a critical site for negotiating lived experiences
of instability and imagining strategies of resistance.
